This is the Costa Rican variable harlequin toad (Atelopus varius), also known as the clown frog (in spite of the fact that it is a true toad). They once ranged from Costa Rica to Panama, but are now listed as critically endangered and reduced to a single population in Costa Rica.
The variable harlequin toads conspicuous colouring serves as a warning to predators of the toads toxicity.

I just spent the last three weeks applying for this research position at a skin cancer lab. During this time, I endured near-endless rounds of email interrogations about my qualifications and aspirations from this grad student, and then an in-person interview that turned out to be a panel interview. In preparation for the interview, I memorized molecular pathways of cellular dysfunction, I read every publication that the principal investigator had on his website, and I had people ask me the hardest questions they could think of so that I could try to prepare some responses.

After suffering through the first interview, they asked me back for another interview the next day, and to provide a list of references. Cue another round of panic attacks even more severe than those before the first interview, as well as frantic scrambling for the email addresses of teachers and advisors who I haven’t talked to in years. This time around, the questions were even harder. At one point, I had to role-play telling a man over the phone that I fucked up his lab results and that his cancer is back.

After a week of radio silence, the grad student told me today that I did not get the position. That I was the second-best candidate. Unfortunately, even when you are told that you beat out 68 other top-level health sciences students, a silver medal provides little comfort when only gold gets the job.

1 in 70. That’s four times more selective than Harvard. I really never stood a chance. But I worked so hard for it—I poured my heart and soul into this application process, even though I don’t even think I have either of those things.

But I didn’t get the position. And now I’m kind of a mess. I don’t want to talk to my study group about it because they all have research positions already and won’t be able to offer much beyond meaningless platitudes, and because I don’t want to start crying in front of them. And I don’t want to talk to my mom about it because she’ll just tell me to shut up and move on because it’s a “First World Problem.”

I’ve been applying for positions for six months now, and this was the first lab to even give me the time of day. I can’t afford to wait another six months for a different lab to acknowledge my existence in this goddamn labyrinth of a university, and I’m never going to get into grad school unless I have this kind of experience under my belt.

I’m feeling hopeless, angry at myself for not doing more and trying harder, and also disgusted by how whiny and self-pitying I’m being.

I just feel really low right now.
